A Proposal to Build a Democratic Society in Vietnam

from the Free Vietnam Alliance

VIETNAM, a nation with all the resources to be self-sufficient, faces disaster; impoverished people, decaying society, a backward economy, and isolation from the civilized world. The economic collapse of the country today will be felt by the next generations, who will inherit its dire consequences, both material and psychological.

In view of the imminent disaster threatening the Vietnamese people, the Free Vietnam Alliance announces the Proposal to Build a Democratic Society in Vietnam to break the impasse in all areas, opening up opportunities to rebuild the country.

The world is entering a new and promising era. Indeed, the threat of nuclear holocaust has been eliminated with the collapse of the Communist bloc. A new multipolar world order is now emerging, based on peaceful economic cooperation for mutual development and solving conflicts through negotiation and diplomacy. By the year 2000, advances in science and technology in the democratic nations will help the peoples of the world achieve a prosperous life. The Southeast Asian nations will then have solved their development problems so that their citizens can better their lives.

In this world scenario, what is the future of Vietnam?

By the year 2000, Vietnam's population will reach about 87 million people. This will present many complex issue for which Marxism-Leninism cannot offer any workable solutions. Only in a free, democratic and humanitarian society will our people break away from poverty and backwardness.

For the sake of our country, we have no choice but to put aside our differences and hatreds of the past, overcome any ambitions for sole power, eliminate extremist attitudes, and free our hands from the chains of Communism.

Vietnam will be a proud member of the world community, along with other nations entering the twenty-first century, a century of humanity, prosperity and peace.
