In June 1991, the Free Vietnam Alliance launched a campaign to honor prisoners of conscience in Vietnam and fight for their release. The campaign received tremendous support and endorsement from the world community. The Alliance sent twenty thousand post cards to governments, organizations, and individuals around the world to appeal for their help in pressuring Hanoi to release Dr. Nguyen Dan Que, a democracy advocate who was recently sentenced to a 20 year-term by Hanoi.
The Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1992 marked the beginning of the FVA's campaign for the release of Professor Doan Viet Hoat who was re-arrested in 1990 after publishing the Dien Dan Tu Do (Freedom Forum) urging the Vietnamese Communist Party leaders to make peaceful changes to democracy.
