San Francisco - On Wednesday, December 9, 1998, Vietnamese Americans will organize a 24-hour hunger strike and rally for Human Rights in Vietnam to mark the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

More than thirty Vietnamese and American dignitaries will participate in the hunger strike. They are leaders of various religious communities and political organizations, prominent writers, journalists, Vietnam veterans and students leaders. Professor Doan Viet Hoat and Mr. Jimmy Tran, the political prisoners released from the Vietnamese communist gulags in September, will be among the hunger-strikers on this day.

The rally will begin with a press conference at 5:00 PM on December 9, 1998.

The hunger strike will immediately follow the press conference.

The slides presentation to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will begin at 8:00 PM, and is followed by a candlelight vigil until 10:00 PM.

On December 10, a commemorative musical presentation will begin at 4:00 PM, leading to the conclusion of the hunger strike at 6:OO PM.
