California State Attorney General Daniel Lungren
Supports Human Rights for Vietnam

STATE OF CALIFORNIA
OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

December 10, 1996

As California's Attorney General, I would like to extend my strong support to the Vietnamese community, as you commemorate the 48th anniversary of the United Nations Resolution 217(a), proclaiming the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

California is fortunate to have benefitted from the countless contributions, hard work and community spirit of its citizens of the Vietnamese descent. As American and defenders of freedom throughout the world, we join together to protest the violation of basic human rights to many individuals in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam who are being punished for their ideological and religious differences. Such individuals include Dr. Nguyen Dan Que, Professor Doan Viet Hoat, and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tu, and many others, who are incarcerated for their belief in freedom and democracy.

International Human Rights Day must be heard around the world. Please be assured of my vigorous endorsement of your efforts of this special day.

Sincerely,
Daniel E. Lungren
Attorney General
