New Vietnamese law criticised

ABC (3/6/99) - Diplomats in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi say a new law, which enshrines the role of the communist-controlled Vietnam Fatherland Front, represents a retreat from democracy.

The new law, which was passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday, codifies the wide-ranging powers of the front in law-making, and the vetting of all political candidates.

The AFP news agency has quoted a European diplomat as saying it's a step backwards from democracy, as it institutionalises the one party system.

The 70-year-old Vietnam Fatherland Front is an umbrella grouping for all non-governmental mass organisations, ranging from trade unions to religions.

Its powers extend to deciding which religions may be officially recognised, and can also deem religions illegal.
