IMMINENT SWEEPING ARREST OF DISSIDENTS IN VIETNAM

FREE VIETNAM ALLIANCE
B.P. 203, 75624 Paris Cedex 13, France

PRESS RELEASE
March 14, 1999

Sources of the Free Vietnam Alliance inside the country have simultaneously alarmed us to the fact that the highest authorities of the Vietnamese Communist Party had issued the order for the arrest of dozens of dissidents in Vietnam.

Heading this blacklist are:
- Former Head of the Marxism-Leninism Institute, Hoang Minh Chinh,
- Writer Hoang Tien,
- Journalist Vu Huy Cuong,
- Political analyzer Nguyen Kien Giang,
- Former Party Secretary of Hai Phong Province, Hoang Huu Nhan.
- etc.

All of these individuals have called on the Party leadership to honestly weed out corrupted figures among its ranks and implement real democracy in Vietnam. These dissidents' writings have been widely circulated among the domestic underground press and outside Vietnam.

According to our sources, mid-level Party cadres are working out the detailed timetable and arranging excuses to carry out the said order. Actual arrests should take place within days.

The Free Vietnam Alliance gravely informs the international community of this new, serious and widespread oppression by Hanoi on the dissidents in Vietnam.

At this point, only international pressure can make the leadership of the Vietnamese Communist Party rescind its order. We urgently call on all human rights organizations, religious and political dignitaries, and governments of the free world to voice your objections to this campaign of terror by Hanoi and exert your diplomatic, economic, and political pressure on the Vietnamese authorities to end its human rights violations in Vietnam.
