Movement for Vietnam's Democracy Formed in Illinois

The newest member movement of the Free Vietnam Alliance was publicly introduced on February 8, 1998 in Chicago, Illinois before more than 100 representatives of various religious, cultural, social, political and professional organizations.

The movement's chairman, Tran Van Lam, declared: "Our love for Vietnam does not allow us to turn a blind eye to the aspirations of our compatriots for freedom and democracy. They have stood up to demand back their rights at home, from Thai Binh (northern Vietnam) to Dong Nai, Xuan Loc (southern Vietnam). Let's pledge our wholehearted support for these men and women."

Poet Nguyen An, secretary of the movement, then announced the Resolution demanding the Vietnamese Communist Regime to release all political prisoners who have peacefully called for freedom and democracy.

Chairman Lam announced the movement's desire to join the Free Vietnam Alliance to push forth the collective effort coordinated by FVA across the world. Nguyen Trong Viet, representing the FVA in North America, welcomed the new movement by reading the FVA Executive Committee's acceptance letter. Dr. Viet and Ngo Trong Duc, another member of the Executive Committee, talked in turn about the problems facing the Vietnamese Communist Party and the Free Vietnam Alliance's practical solution to democratize and rebuild Vietnam.
