  • Mental Health Awareness Week - FVA's George presents hospital radio for mental wellbeing

    Created: 08/05/2024
    News/Events Category: FVA News
This item will show under the following categories: Health and Social Care

    Name: George Cuthill
Role: Currently working with Kingdom Community Bank

I am a hospital radio presenter. I spend two hours in a darkened room playing music to an unseen audience and linking each choice with a personal story of concerts I’ve been to including Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Clean Bandit, and Errol Garner – a genius jazz pianist. At the end I am so relaxed I fall into my car, at peace with the world.

Eight years ago I responded to an advert for volunteers. I interviewed and asked when I could start going round the wards asking for requests – they asked if I would like to present. I didn’t think I would, but was sold when I was told that I have a good evening voice. My mentor Barclay and I have become friends and we meet every two weeks. We have a coffee and put the world to rights.

I present 7.00-9.00pm on a Wednesday at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.

If you're interested in doing something similar, I'd recommend getting in touch with your local hospital radio station.
